Tabriz is a metropolis of northwestern Iran and the capital of East Azerbaijan province — an ancient city with a prominent role in the country's political, commercial, and cultural history. In several periods, including under the Ilkhanids and at the start of the Safavid dynasty, Tabriz was Iran's capital, and its position on the Silk Road made it a major commercial hub; the historic Tabriz Bazaar was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2010. In modern times the city was a center of the Constitutional Revolution (1906–1911) and the home of figures such as Sattar Khan and Baqer Khan, playing a leading role in Iran's modernization. Tabriz is also the principal center of Azeri-Turkish culture and language in Iran.
