The Alborz Range & Mount Damavand
The Alborz range is a mountain belt across northern Iran running along the southern Caspian coast, walling off the sea's moisture from the interior plateau. Its highest peak, Damavand, at roughly 5,610 m, is the highest summit in Iran and the Middle East and the tallest volcano in Asia. Damavand is a dormant stratovolcano; though it has no recorded historical eruption, hot springs and summit fumaroles indicate residual thermal activity. The mountain holds a prominent place in Iranian myth and literature, including the Shahnameh.
